1941/01/13 - Zürich Dead at 58, James Joyce.
Joyce war 1940, wegen des Einmarsches der Wehrmacht in Frankreich, nach Zürich ausgewichen. Am 11. Januar 1941 muss er sich, nach einem Darmdurchbruch, einer Operation unterziehen. Nachdem sich sein Zustand zunächst besserte, verschlechtert er sich am folgenden Tag. Trotz mehrerer Transfusionen fällt Joyce in Bewusstlosigkeit. Er wacht gegen 2 Uhr morgens auf, bittet eine Krankenschwester, seine Frau und seinen Sohn zu holen, sagt, nach einigem Unverständlichen: „Does nobody understand?“ und stirbt.
Finnegans Wake bleibt sein letzter Roman.
